I've known Linda since Kasari and I were teenagers. On my first visit from Toronto I stayed at her house by the ocean in Kits. That visit, and the ones that followed, were filled with laughter, wisdom, celebration and a sense of always being welcome. It was my first experience with a Light-Govender home but I came to realize over the years that they all had things in common -a place of welcome, for gathering, for sharing ideas, creativity and all with just the right amount of...chaos. When I eventually brought my partner, Matt, we looked at each other and said "I want our home to feel like this". When I brought my child, Leo, he quickly cottoned onto "Grandma Linda' and the next generation was seamlessly folded in. I learned an incredible amount from Linda over the years - both through her advice and by her example. An indomitable matriarch, her dedication to live in a thoughtful and principled way, to build and hold relationships, through joy and adversity awed and inspired me. Her loss leaves a giant hole. I've spent the last while playing through memories in my mind, re-reading her writing, looking at photos. She possessed a powerful intellect combined with a big heart, an iron will and a miraculous supply of energy. To me, to be included in Linda's life and community meant that you would be welcomed, engaged, challenged, encouraged, fed, made to belly laugh and would always have...home. She passed these ways on to the next generation and it’s an incredible legacy. Linda - thank you. For everything. I will miss you.
